Transient People or Societal Degradation?
Posted by The *Angriest* Pharmacist as PSE, True Story, Vacation, Work Sucks
Maybe it means the profession has grown where everyone trusts every pharmacist (and pharmacy) fully, or maybe it means our society has degraded into a transient grouping of people with no urge to support a single pharmacy or better their healthcare experience by staying true to a single pharmacy or pharmacist, but today, I encountered something that lies somewhere in the middle.
I received a bottle for a script from some small town outside of Indianapolis. Not such a weird occurance. I’m pretty near to a major interstate. Here’s where it gets silly. The script was written by a doctor in Atlanta, Georgia. The first fill was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where it was subsequently transferred to the store in Indiana. The man lives in Iowa. Maybe he’s a truck driver? I don’t know, but he used three different chains in all.
Of course, it was for Viagra, and he wanted only one tablet. Again, not that weird, but we’re talking several thousands of miles between all the different pharmacies.
Is there anyone that is a diehard Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, or Costco customer anymore? Even if they end up somewhere else, they still go to that pharmacy? I don’t know anymore.
What does it mean? Someone explain it to me…

Why does someone want to buy 96 tablets of 30-mg Pseudoephedrine before they go on vacation? I got that today and was perplexed. You’re gonna be gone for 7 days, and you think you’re going to take 13 tablets of PSE per day? C’mon! I don’t even take that much in a year.

Yeah, I’ve bought that many PSE before a scuba diving trip. Four tabs/day for me, hubby, and other divers who forgot to bring it and cannot equalize their ears.
Dear Sir or Madam,
over here in the United Kingdom, we appear to have a problem with pharmaceutical DIY using pseudoephedrine. Perhaps your customers have more class than Joe and Joanna Average on this side of The Pond.
Here’s a link with all the vibrancy of 600mg of Sodium Amytal.

I’m not a pharmacist, and I do not and have not ever worked in a pharmacy. I do enjoy your blog however. Thanks.
I am loyal to one pharmacy. It is part of a chain and I try to stick with the one branch that I regularly patronize. I will go out of my way to stick to “my” pharmacy. My relationship with the pharmacy is important to me, because the prescriptions I have to have filled on a regular basis are important to my continuing health and not “optional.” (Does that make sense?), i.e., longstanding diabetic.
I “quit” another chain about a year ago after a couple of years swearing that I was never going back there again. Nothing specific, everything in general. I was a loyal customer and believe me, they made A LOT of money from me every month. The last straw was the day I was released from the hospital after cancer surgery and my husband stopped at the pharmacy on our way home (we live in a semi-rural area and it takes a good thirty minutes to get to the pharmacy from our home). We presented the pharmacy tech (or pharmacist, I cannot recall) with my prescriptions and were told it would take 45 minutes. I asked (in a very nondemanding way) if it could be any sooner because I was not feeling well and had just been released from the hospital (as evidenced by the prescriptions and the still-attached hospital bracelet). It was the middle of the day during the middle of the week and there was not a line, etc., or I would not have asked. Long story short, I was made to wait and given no consideration. My husband took me home and came all the way back into town for the prescriptions a while later.
I always try to be respectful to my pharmacist and the technicians because I appreciate the service they give me. I could not possibly work in a job such as that, because I quite frankly don’t have the temperament.
I’d be interested on your opinion as to whether my request was unreasonable.
Thanks, and hang in there.
There’s a lot more to it than saying whether the tech was right or wrong. When I encounter that, I merely say, “I will do these as fast and as accurately as I can.” Most of the time, people are satisfied. I’ve heard some people (techs and pharmacists) tell people times LONGER than they knew it would take so they would never be wrong (or go over the time they said) — if that were the case, your tech was wrong. That’s dumb to do.
Now if you handed him a stack of 10 discharge scripts - 45 mins is a pretty good estimate!
On the other side - I’ve told people 15 minutes thinkin it would take me 15 minutes and be done with them in 4….or 45 — the time it takes to do something can change in a matter of seconds.
Why wouldn’t you buy 96 at a time? In Texas, you have to present your DL, they take down your data, etc.; I’d imagine most states are similar. Why would I want to do this for 24 tabs at one price to come back much sooner, when I can do this for 96 at less cost per pill with ultimately less hassle?
Seems like nothing but common sense to me.
And that’s exactly why you are a retard. The average person will not take 96 tablets of PSE by the expiration date. I bought a 48 ct when I was sick (that’s the only size I sell) last november. I’ve still got 35 left. The expiration date is 05-08. It’s unlikely I’ll get through them. Which is exactly my point. If someone takes 96 with any consistency, they need to be taking something else besides PSE - perhaps treating the underlying issue…say allergies? Perhaps Claritin would be a good addition? Singulair? Taking PSE on a regular basis is just not good on the ole’ ticker…
And your ‘texas’ law is actually a national law signed by the Prez called the CMEA - search for it - you’ll find more information.
Finally, buying 96 doesn’t save you any money…it’s just two packs of 48…not a 96 count. So it’s like $6.50 no matter what…
