No, that was *not* your question…

Posted by The *Angriest* Pharmacist as Lazy People, Stupid People, True Story, Work Sucks

“La Pharmacia, this is TheAngriestPharmacist. How can I help you?”

“Yes, I had a question.” [Yes is not the answer to the question I asked]

“Alright, go right ahead…”

“What is Paroxetine for?”

“Well, it’s actually approved for lots of different things. It’s mainly used for depression, but it can also be used for generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even obcessive compulsive disorder…”

“I see…is it the generic for Paxil?”

“Yes, ma’am, it is…”

“Okay, that was my question…Thanks!”

No, that was not your question. The problem here is that people are so poor at communicating what they actually want an mean, they immediately pretend like it was YOU who was not effectively answering their question or communicating with them. Should I have answered the question, “What is Paroxetine for?” with “It’s the generic for Paxil,” this lady would have called me retarded and told me that was not what she asked. Then she would have asked what it were for — and THAT would have been her question!

Freaking crap…

The following jobs must be done daily at my pharmacy: Put away the order, take out the trash, put the HIPAA trash where it needs to be, Return Scripts to stock that are older than 7 days (call the patient if they are a regular), attempt to rectify any outstanding “problems” from the day/previous day, call the doctors that have overnight voicemails to get them out of the way, vacuum, package and put stamps on any Rxs we mail out, sanitize the trays and counters, refill all bottles and lids, label the day’s prescriptions, and make the pharmacist smile at least once with an anecdote.

That list is hanging in my pharmacy (mine is verbatim). My question is, why in the hell does none of that shit ever get done? My tech help is limited, and I can admit we are a little understaffed. But, why am I the only person willing to hang out a few minutes after or come in a few minutes early to insure they get done — it only makes the day run smoother and more efficiently. Not only am I the only person willing to do it, I’m the only person that cares if it even gets done…especially the important shit.

Anyone else have a pharmacy that isn’t efficient because the little stuff isn’t done in a timely fashion?

Right now we are overstaffed because we have several interns in our pharmacy. Their hours fall on the district’s budget and not ours.

All I can say is that it is not much of an improvement as far as getting stuff done. If a job takes 1 person 1 hour to do then it will take 2 people 1 hour to do as well. People just seem to do less work when there is more people around to do it.

The truly lazy people really seem to do nothing then!

If there is a pharmacy that doesn’t have this problem and can spin like a top than I would love to work there, but they are probably not hiring.

As I have observed, the people that are proactive and conscientious love their career, as it is their life. The others just show up at work for the paycheck. I was told by a ‘paycheck’ individual that I am bossy, micro-managing and I make things too complicated. The problem is… there are more of them than us!

Amen, brother. I am fully of the mindset that if i want it done (and done correctly) I need to do it myself.

I had a tech ask if she could go home early last night because there was, and I quote, “nothing left to do”.

So fine, leave. You weren’t doing much anyway. Let ME charge the Rx on the lady’s VISA and let ME put the checked Rx in the bags and into the drawer. Let ME put the 12 pens away. But by all means, you go home, because there is “Nothing Left To Do”.

I find that the cure for ‘there’s nothing left to do’ is to say “Oh good, we can get caught up on some things we’ve been neglecting”. Then have them clean the nastiest, crustiest, slimiest, filthiest corner of the pharmacy that you can find. (i recommend the tops of cabinets or the lower recesses behind equipment). The smart ones will catch on after one time, but the average one will require a few repeats. But I guarantee that once they realize that you’ll have them clean the bowels of hell, you’ll never get that question again! You may even notice that they’ll find their own work so that you don’t find something for them. Our pharmacy’s never been so clean! :-D

Ya, know, it goes both ways. I currently work in fast food, while I wait for a job in pharmacy, and conversations which go like this is what I have to deal with daily at work:

Q: Would you like that Frosty in chocolate or vanilla?
A: Yes. (Did you not hear that “or” in the question? Turn up your hearing aids, people!)

Q: I’ll be with you in just one moment.
A: Yes, I would like a [insert order here]
My response (frusterated): Sir/Ma’am, I’ll be with you in just one moment.

It’s almost like some people cannot understand basic english. *sigh*

Yes, there is extra stuff to do, and I do agree that the techs need to do it. HOWEVER, I as a pharmacist have been berated by management (in the past) to clean all the dishes from the whole day, including compounding, and vacuum before I leave. That was in the day of a 12 hour shift with maybe a 1/2 hour break…I said, O.K, if you are willing to pay a pharmacist double overtime, I will do the F**KING dishes!!!

hmm… do your techs get paid for being there early of staying late? Speaking of which how much do you pay? I would love to relocate and work at your store! I’d vacuum and make ya smile TWICE a day!

All work done depends on who you have working. I am one of the senior techs at my store and refuse to leave until all tasks have been completed… such as trash taken out to dumpster (not left by door), all meds put in PROPER place not shoved behind comp terminals, vaccume, and dust counters. Needless to say I constantly clean up after the other thechs who want to talk on their cell phone in the corner and totally ignore all customers.
