Happy Freaking New Year Indeed

Posted by The *Angriest* Pharmacist as Management, Me being a dick, Stupid People, True Story, Work Sucks

I hope everyone went to get their prescription today. New year, new month…I NEED MY MEDS TODAY…NAY — NOW!

The Angry Pharmacist had a bitch of a day.

My day wasn’t so bad. We went crazy on staffing, and that helped a ton. I had myself, another pharmacist, a full-time cashier, two techs, and a pharmacy student who is on Winter Break still…so I didn’t do so badly.

I also had a hell of a time with assfucks who don’t understand what a deductible is and why they are paying full price. Obviously, their pharmacist is ripping them off right? Give me a freaking break.

I also had a lady come in and want me to rerun scripts that were filled on 12/31/07. She was the dumbest person ever and paid cash for them — over $200. I asked them why they picked them up if they were so expensive. The response? “We didn’t know they were that expensive!” What???? Listen Motherfucker - I have your receipt. It says you paid cash — $200 worth of bills. You knew damn good and well. Now, you want me to rebill them with today’s date? That’s illegal. That’s fraud. But, again…the pharmacist is ripping them off. Like I need to take your $200 bucks and put it in my pocket.

I went as far as getting their Medicare plan on the line and have THEM tell them that it was wrong to do that, illegal, and that they should have known better than to pay for them since they were in the donut hole. But…whimper…they were poor and couldn’t afford that…they happened to have 200 bones on their person though…

I didn’t give them the answer they want - so what’d they do? They ran to the fucking store manager. He came back and asked me what was going on — in front of them. They stood there and snickered “aww this mothuhfuckuh is gonna get it now” — Wrong. He came to my little window. I said the following, “The Pharmacy is my domain. If someone ever comes to you with a pharmacy problem again - you’d better find a way to send them back. Tell them you have nothing to do with the pharmacy and no control over it — which you don’t. If you continue to run back here like you are going to right a wrong, I am going to make your life a living hell. You will find yourself in this pharmacy 150 times a day getting consulted on every little decision I have to make. You know nothing of our protocol. You know nothing of pharmacy law. I’ll call you if I need help stocking the OTC or running the register. Other than that…butt out.” [I had fire in my eyes at this point.]

He turned around, looked at them and said, “Sorry, I can’t help you all. The pharmacy is a separate entity of the company. I thought there was an error with the register. You’ll have to talk with the pharmacist to get this all straightened out…”

Fucking. Burn. Note: I learned this tactic in a comment on my blog, Pharmacy Mike’s, or perhaps it was UN_PC_Rph — I’m not sure. Either way, it worked flawlessly. Kudos!

Anyway — I ended up just rebilling it with today’s date and refunding their money. Illegal? Yes. Ethically the right thing to do considering they really couldn’t afford it? Probably…So, the ends justified the means…and it got them the hell out of my pharmacy. They stole 45 minutes of my time…I did let them know the favor that was being done and how to not make the same error in the future…I wasn’t a dick about that though…

Hope everyone else had a decent day…

I’m confused. You went to the trouble to get Medicare on the phone to tell them this was an illegal practice and even stood down the store manager, practically daring him to do something, but then rerang the scripts anyway?

Maybe I’m reading this wrong. If not, then why didn’t you just ring them up in the first place???

P.S. You make reference to the fact that they are poor yet these people, who had no idea how much the scripts would be, just happened to have $200 CASH on their person. What “poor” person walks around with that much dough???

That’s a valid point.

I left out the part where he kind of explained where the 200 bucks was all the cash they had for the next two weeks. That was kind of important.

I think I just called them out because they approached me like real dicks. Then after they realized I wasn’t being a jerk, that I was serious — they changed their tune a bit…

That does seem weird though — poorly written post on my part…check the timestamp…drowsy drunk writing…sorry!

TAP, You showed you have a heart and compassion and common sense all at the same time. What a difficult balancing act. I’ve even
given stuff away and occasionally reached in my wallet and pulled out cash and lent it to a NEEDY person.

It’s a wonder we all don’t have ulcers.

See, these are the sitautions that get to me the most. Like you said, ethically, you did the right thing in the end by rerunning the prescriptions. However, you initially said no and argued no because it was against the law. The customer complained, caused a scene, brought in a store manager, and otherwise wasted your time before you decided to rebill the scripts.

I’m not criticizing your decision because I probably would have responded to the situation exactly as you did. I’m just pointing out that the customesr whined, complained, bitched, and moaned until they finally got what they wanted. I guarantee you that they did not learn their lesson from this exchange, but instead went home and complained to everyone at their fucking bridge game that their pharmacist is an asshole. Furthermore, it makes them think that they can always get their way if they complain loudly for a long enough time.

It just sucks because as pharmacists we are governed by a million laws that we are constantly forced to break on a daily basis in the name of helping out customers who didn’t plan or prepare correctly.

I have to give you props for putting the store manager in his place. I think that guy will think twice before intervening in pharmacy business again.

Thanks guys - I can see now that I reread again that my post is contradictory in what I say and ultimately did…

But, as Pharmacy Mike pointed out, that’s the way that our arms are pulled each and every day. Our laws pull one arm in one direction and the customers yank the other one another direction. Meanwhile, our pharmacy management isn’t pulling — they’re back there doing something else…more volume, less staff…

I guess the post just shows a little bit of all of this, but leaves a little out…I still think that I did the right thing - but for the wrong reasons. I did it to get them out and shut them up. That’s what they wanted. And mike is right, they got their way. But, if I didn’t budge, they paid 140 something bucks for plavix that they coulda got for 20 a few hours later at walgreens when the clock struck midnight…Tangled web indeed.

sometimes it comes down to “how much of my time is this worth?” because every minute spent hassling and arguing with one pain in the rear customer is a minute taken away from someone who could actually use your help. i recently found myself in a similar situation where we had been having issues with an elderly couple all day long. they kept calling us on the phone, and i finally just called it quits so that i could concentrate on my job and help those people who actually needed and appreciated me. what i done may not have been entirely “legal” but it was in the best interest of my mental well-being and the well-being of the other patients i was trying to take care of.

What was going on IndieTech? What’d you end up doing?

Who waited on them on 12/31? (I hope not TAP!) I would have told them to come back on 1/2 when they would be out of the donut hole. (who came up with that anyway? Gives donuts a bad name… I digress…) Extending them a few on 12/31 would have solved that problem and made the RPh/CPhT/cashier look like a god!

I’m not sure, but if I knew I’d kick them in the nuts…

I’m sure it was my pharmacist counterpart. He’s a slow poke, douchebag, and asshole all mixed in one…I really dislike him…we’re nearing in on hate since he creates so many problems I have to rectify. He cannot make a decision by himself. He just throws all his shit and notes in a tote and leave it for me…asshole indeed!

Well the first of the year was HELLATIOUS untrained techs, lazy techs, techs that dont give a shit, and techs that just stanerd there. Well anyways I being Cpht now has everything blamed on me because I should know everything about pharmacy was getting yelled at left and right do this why havent you done this oh angrily yelled out the reason why Im doing all these other things is cause yalls lazy asses wont do anything and you wonder why the customers bitch and you getting cussed out it all comes back to customer service..i went on to tell them that cvs doesnt pay you to sit around all day eating and then going out to smoke for 40 minutes when your ass could be in the pharmacy helping out or figuring out whatneeds to be done next I swear that is the worst store by far that ive workd at you have 4 pissy women and 1 male(me) which just got Cpht going back and forth I use logice before I open my mouth they dont they just start popping off some hillbilly shit like my brother is goin kick yo ass i said well tell your brother he can be kicking a cops ass when he comes up so shutup and do your damn job and leave me alone!
