People are retarded…

Today during my lunch break (yeah, I got 30 full minutes, bitches) I went up to my stores front registers to buy some Skoal (that’s right, I’m a dipper occasionally). In front of my was a young spray of a bitch-to-be. She wanted to buy “two packs of Newport Lights in a hard box.” She got carded and was 18-years old. So, she got her smokes lickity split. Then I noticed her other purchase — a fucking pregnancy test.

I wanted to be like, “YOU STUPID BITCH - ARE YOU SERIOUS?.” But, I kept my mouth shut because it’s her future fuckup, not mine. I know some of those that read this blog may side with the goodness of people and explain the situation with, “Well, it could be that she’s buying that test for a friend.” Bull-fucking-shit. I’ve been in pharmacy for many years. I’ve sold hundreds of pregnancy tests to many young females. Interestingly enough, I’ve never sold a pregnancy test to the person intending to use it. It’s always for a friend…same with condoms and Plan B. You can put it together from there.

Then, I got to the register. I told the lady what I wanted. Then she noticed that I was holding a bag of beef jerky, a Mountain Dew, and Snickers Bar. She tried to take those items out of my hand. I told her, “Whoa hold on a second, I bought these a half hour ago. Hell, this soda is warm.”
“Well, I’m going to need your receipt.” [I don't keep those things - especially since I'm the store's pharmacist. This retarded lady was new, and she didn't know me, apparently.]
“I don’t have it on me. I’m the Pharmacy Manager here. I think you can take my word on it.”
“Sir. If you don’t have your receipt, I have to assume you stole them. I’m required to ring them up again.”
“Young lady, I beg to differ. I think you need to consult your training manual. Then I think you need to talk to your supervisor and find out exactly what sort of allegations you are allowed to make — especially allegations toward a man that is trustworthy and your supervisor’s supervisor. I’m in charge of this entire store.” [At this point, my sale was concluded, so I walked the fuck away -- fuming.]

The next thing I know, I hear this bitch paging security to the front door.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. I was livid. But, I kept my cool. Our one security guy came running to the front door, and I held my hands up and said, “You got me! Lock me up!” Then the front end manager came up and her and I went to her office and had a little chat.

Our new cashier now knows her place, our policies, and to never, ever fuck with The *Angriest* Pharmacist.

Note: If you want to read another hilarious story about Sam’s Club accusing me of stealing, check out this story — it’s absolutely fantastic!

Note 2: I realize that I went a little overboard with my comments to the cashier, and I was downright rude to her. But, I thought it was common knowledge that if a customer says they paid for it, you have to assume they did — especially INSIDE the store. Arrests cannot be made until exit. Additionally, a person identifying themselve as a pharmacist and your bosses’ boss should also be someone that you would believe and trust. Plus, what else am I if not an angry dickhead?

TAP, I know where you’re coming from. But, I also don’t know how big and sticky your company is. At my last retail job, which was over ten years ago, we employees–ALL of us— had to attach our receipts to our in-store consumptions (soda, candy, etc.) to prove we didn’t pilfer them. Employee theft is a huge problem, and no one’s word was taken. I know how you feel; I’d like to think that my position as a pharmacist would let them cut me some slack, but even in the 1980s, no one was exempt from the gaze of the Loss Prevention Department. If your store is actually easy on you, gee, that would have been nice to enjoy in my time, but I didn’t have that luxury.

I get what your saying. I feel like ‘if you can trust me with the keys to the narcs, then what’s the problem?”… but I also understand where they’re coming from too. Employee theft is huge and pharmacists are no less guilty. She should have been commended for performing her job correctly, not belittled. Although I do feel like they should either trust me or fire me.

Think of it from her point of view. She was probably thinking “so it’s MY fault that YOU threw away your receipt?!” … Just like we would bitch about someone who forgot their new insurance card and expect us to just know the new info.

I’m usually pretty hardcore opinionated
on things, but I really see both sides of this. It’s really kind of irritating since I usually hate ‘the system’. LOL

Mike, would your opinion change if I told you my place of business has 20 total employees? Eleven in the pharmacy, six up front, and three in the photolab…

Now you may swing to another side…

not really. There are only twenty or so employees in this location and someone gets fired every 5 or 6 months for theft. I think the reason I see the other side is the number of times that the guilty parties are the ones that you wouldn’t expect. I will say this though… After reading it again, it seems like you both went to the extreme… Maybe that’s what set you off. It does read as her being a bit accusatory.

The chain I worked at that had the receipt policy was rather small and down-home. They just made it a rule, and we followed it. I realize that it is a bitch to have your integrity questioned, but employee theft is a big issue, and I suppose most companies have had to learn about it from hard experience. There must have been a lot of “honest” folks who somehow figured that the company “owed them something,” so they took what they want, and by so doing, established what they thought was their own fringe benefit.

Guess I have a question about those coupons you find in magazines for birth control. This may be a total wee-tawd question (I’m not in the pharmacy biz), but if you have insurance and the copay for let’s say $17, can you use those coupons? Or is that just for full price w/o insurance.

OMG! When I read this story it so reminded me of my place of employment where employee purchases render a “code 9″ which means the manager gets paged to the front of the store and searches your bags to make sure you aren’t stealing anything in front of EVERYBODY. It makes you feel like such a criminal. I hate the policy so much. I wrote corporate a letter about it, and I refuse to buy anything that might make one of these operations “necessary”. I think it is a pile of shit that they treat employees like criminals yet our stock prices are affected by “how we treat customers and how we treat each other” according to a dry erase board in the office. Let me mind you, it is standard procedure to tell a known-tobe-shoplifting customer to have a nice day as they walk out with their loot. CRAP. It’s all CRAP. I was sure to include this and the company’s mission statement to show how contradictory the whole policy was. But of course nothing has yet been done about it….

Nicole #1…

It depends. Sometimes they can be run “split billed” where the coupon comes off your copay. Some cannot be split and must be run as primary — the latter usually mean your insurance would provide a better deal. Those are targeted to those w/o insurance. Still yet, some are coupons for use at the register. They are run as checks or coupons and come off the copayment further.

However, most coupons cannot be used on Medicaid or Medicare Part D.

Thanks TAP~! I figured as much.
My brother’s gf does medical research through her mom’s business and their insurance is super crappy. Doesn’t pay for labs or medicine (only dr’s visits). Was trying to see if it would be cheaper to get a script and fill it for her or for her to use those coupons.
I work for a GYN office on a military base and we cannot get samples:(
